Traffic Register Number

Individuals (Natural Persons)

  1. A valid foreign passport
  2. Valid visa issued by Home Affairs
  3. Original certified letter from your employer, educational institution, or for general employment purposes
  4. Registration documents, Company Registration Certificate, or Tax Clearance Certificate
  5. Affidavit stating the reason for the application
  6. Two passport-sized photographs
  7. Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement) dated within the last 3 months
  • If the utility bill is not in your name, the account holder must provide an affidavit confirming that you reside at the address, with the utility bill attached
  • If the company operates from a residential property, a company letterhead must be attached, indicating the property owner(s), along with their identity document and proof of address
  1. If you live in an informal settlement, you must provide a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your address
  2. Completed ANR form – Application and Notice of Traffic Register Number
  3. Signed affidavit

Application for Body of Persons

  1. Company or organization letterhead applying for the Traffic Register Number, including a statement appointing the proxy and representative. If there are multiple branches or offices, please provide a proxy for each location.
  2. Valid identification documents for the appointed representative(s) or proxy(s).
  3. Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement).
  • If the utility bill is not in your name, the bill owner must provide an affidavit confirming that you reside at the address, with the utility bill attached.
  • If the organization operates from a residential property, a letterhead must be attached stating the property owners, along with their identity documents and proof of address.
  1. Completed ANR form – Application and Notice of Traffic Register Number.
  2. Signed affidavit.

Who Needs to Apply for a Traffic Register Number (TRN)?

You need to apply for a TRN if you belong to any of the following categories:

  • Foreign nationals
  • Businesses operating as non-legal entities
  • Partnerships
  • Sole proprietorships
  • Municipal, provincial, or government authorities
  • Churches, congregations, or welfare organizations
  • Recreational organizations
  • Educational institutions
  • Trusts or statutory bodies

Categories of Traffic Register Numbers

Individuals:

  1. Foreign nationals who want to purchase or register a vehicle in South Africa must apply for a Traffic Register Number to be entered into the National Transport Information System (eNaTIS).

Body of Persons:

  1. Organizations operating as non-legal persons must apply for a Traffic Register Number to register vehicles in South Africa. Each branch or separate business address must appoint a representative to act as the contact person for administrative purposes.
